In line with the Australian Government’s aid policy, ACIAR’s programs have embraced a sharper focus on the Indo-Pacific region, where the majority of our bilateral investments are directed. During the year, we started phasing down programs in Iraq, Egypt, and across the Maghreb, with all activities to be brought to conclusion in 2014–15. In contrast, we are strengthening our programs closer to home, particularly in Papua New Guinea, Fiji, Myanmar and Pakistan.
During the year, Australia assumed the chair of the Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA). This comes at a time when the Indian Ocean region is increasing in importance. ACIAR’s programs operate across many of the IORA member states, and support economic growth and sustainable development across the region.
