ACIAR is committed to funding research into profitable agribusiness systems in eastern Indonesia. The methodologies outlined in this toolbook for practitioners of value-chain analysis were originally published in English by Agricultural Development International. They have been updated and translated into Indonesian, and will be used to analyse and identify agribusiness development opportunities and interventions that have the potential to improve livelihoods of the poor in Indonesia. Livestock disease constrains livelihood development in the Mekong countries through loss of animals and their productivity, restriction of trade within and between countries, and the diseases that can be transmitted from livestock to humans. The term biosecurity describes the methods used to contain these diseases and prevent their transmission.

ACIAR has provided significant, long-term research investment into tropical sea cucumber aquaculture in the Asia–Pacific region. Work has included large-scale hatchery culture of sandfish (a species of sea cucumber), techniques for releasing cultured juveniles into the wild, and sea ranching and pond culture. ACIAR, together with the Secretariat of the Pacific Community, organised a symposium to review this work, as well as research from other parts of the world.

Inoculant biofertilisers are preparations that contain beneficial micro-organisms that are applied to crops with the aim of reducing or replacing more costly and environmentally damaging chemical fertilisers. Research has shown that rice yields in Vietnam can be maintained and even increased with reduced application rates of chemical fertiliser when treated with the biofertiliser BioGro. However, the benefits of reduced input costs and potential yield increases can only be achieved if there is adequate quality control of biofertiliser production.

In response to the Royal Cambodian Government’s National Poverty Reduction Strategy (2003–2005), ACIAR funded research to develop sustainable farming systems for crops, with a focus on maize, soybean, sesame, mungbean, peanut and cowpea in upland areas of Kampong Cham and Battambang provinces. The aim was to help reduce poverty and contribute to food security at household and national levels through the development of technologies and opportunities for the production of non-rice upland crops.

Native forest management in Papua New Guinea: advances in assessment, modelling and decision-making

This report reviews the historical context of forest management and the recent focus on tropical forest-based climate-change mitigation in PNG, and identifies challenges and priorities. Advances in the assessment of timber, carbon stocks and biodiversity, as well as in the quantitative understanding of forests through modelling, are described in order to provide a scientific basis for forest-management decision-making at both the community and the government level.

Sustainable intensification of Rabi cropping in southern Bangladesh using wheat and mungbean

ACIAR has supported cattle health and production research programs in many countries, focusing on component technologies such as forages, epidemiology, vaccine development, nutrition and genetics. Increasing focus has been given to understanding how these technologies can be adapted to and integrated into smallholder farming systems. The case studies presented here highlight the approaches that have been taken by recent ACIAR-funded projects in Indonesia, Vietnam and China.
