Summary

This handbook described simple, reliable methods of measuring nitrogen fixation that have emerged from ACIAR-funded research. It is intended for use by developing country scientists who desire a better understanding of the role of nitrogen fixation in cropping systems. Biological nitrogen fixation by food and forage legumes can add significant amounts of nitrogen to the soil for use by companion or subsequent cereal crops. It is hoped that this cheaper alternative to nitrogen fertilisers can be better utilised by resource-poor farmers, who are the ultimate clients of technologies emerging from research that ACIAR supports.
