Overview Objectives

An ACIAR project, FST/2006/088, promoted diverse fuelwood production systems in PNG. This follow-on activity seeks to define the structures and processes required to establish effective and sustainable community-based, commercial entities in the forestry sector, with a focus on establishment of charcoal producer-vendor groups in Mt Hagen and Lae. These groups will involve: a permanent sales-point at a central market - demonstrating the value of charcoal stoves while selling hot food, charcoal and low-cost stoves; group members regularly producing and delivering charcoal to the sales-point; group members committed to growing the firewood for transformation into charcoal using the production systems developed in the fuelwood project; and a system of equitable and transparent distribution among group members of wealth generated from charcoal sales. The outcomes of this project will augment the planning of ACIAR’s new community forestry project in PNG.
