Overview Objectives
The use of high N2 fixing cultivars offers scope in better harnessing benefits from biological nitrogen fixation (BNF). Occurrence of grossly different nodulation variants (non-nodulation to high nodulation) within particular materials of chickpea and pigeonpea has been established. High-nodulating selections yielded 13-31% higher than the low-nodulating selections of the same cultivar. Non-nodulating (Nod) selections can serve as a reliable reference base in BNF quantification studies. Inclusion of these nodulation variants in early stages of the ACIAR PN 9210 should improve the scope of its success. The new germplasm will be useful in basic studies that may lead to developing BNF quantification methods in amide-exporting legumes.
Project Outcomes
The proposed activities under the project were undertaken as planned. More nodulation variants from wilt resistant chickpea lines and from pigeonpea lines were identified with gross variability in nodulation capacity within materials subsequently confirmed. Limited variants used in chickpea-sorghum and pigeonpea-safflower system suggested greater yield of the systems involving high nodulating legumes than those involving low nodulating legumes. Confirmed high and low nodulating/N fixing variants, available in early 1995, were provided to the involved partners. Subsequently the variants developed/confirmed will be provided to them in year 2 of the project. Most of the variants showed expected nodulation capacities at all the testing sites.
