Overview Objectives

The semi-arid savanna vegetation found in Botswana supports livestock production, which is the countrys major agricultural activity. Livestock numbers have increased from 100 000 at the beginning of this century to over 3 million. The combined effect of an expanding livestock industry and high population growth has increased the pressure on the savanna ecosystems of Botswana leading to land degradation. The aim of this small project is to provide a map and produce a database to indicate the nature and extent of land degradation in a 30 x 30 km pilot area and show how this relates to human or livestock induced activity. Additionally, the projects aims to develop surface modelling data on the amount of soil being eroded, showing in some detail the processes of erosion (including run-off and run-on factors) and the inherent nutrient loss to rain-fed agriculture and related reduction in biomass.
