South Pacific food handling
Overview Objectives
Horticultural production for export commenced in the Pacific around 100 years ago. The industry has bright prospects because of relatively low capital input and quick returns, and long-term alienated land is not involved. Changes in trading arrangements in Pacific metropolitan countries have meant that Pacific farmers must become more reliable producers of quality produce to remain competitive. This project aims to examine the problems that may prevent development of an export crop, particularly problems of postharvest handling and transportation, and to carry out research into improving the existing technology. Initial work is being undertaken on bananas, taro, paw paw and fresh coconuts.
