Overview Objectives

Economic losses due to disease are a major constraint on pig production in Vietnam. Conventional disease control measures have not been successful, and so there is an increasing need to develop economically viable and environmentally sustainable strategies for disease control. A program is proposed to breed pigs with enhanced immune responsiveness and disease resistance. The availability of disease resistant livestock would reduce reliance on chemicals and enhance performance, thereby significantly improving the efficiency of pig production. Consumers would benefit from reduced production costs and reduced risk of drug residues in pigmeat.
