15/07/2013 Top 10 nutritious leafy vegetables in the Pacific

An ACIAR-funded study on nutritionally rich leafy vegetables in the Pacific region has identified the ‘Top 10’ and produced a series of fact sheets to promote them to indigenous communities. The study’s goal is to encourage the production and consumption of these important food crops, to help combat the current epidemic of diet-related diseases in Pacific islanders and indigenous Australians.

19/06/2013 Australia and Indonesia celebrate 30 years of partnership in agricultural research

This week we commemorate 30 years of agricultural research collaboration between Australia and Indonesia.

The Australian Ambassador to Indonesia, Mr Greg Moriarty, said Australia was committed to assisting Indonesia to achieve lasting food security and overcome poverty in rural areas.

“Through ACIAR-Indonesian partnerships, agriculture industries are creating opportunities for smallholder farmers to share in the country’s recent growth,” Mr Moriarty said.

04/06/2013 New publications catalogue

The updated and revamped ACIAR publications catalogue is now available online and in hardcopy.

ACIAR has an extensive publication program. The range of scientific publications includes ‘how-to’ manuals, workshop proceedings, extension publications, technical reports, and monographs. Individual projects are reported on in the Final Reports series.

Corporate publications include Annual Reports, Annual Operational Plans, the Corporate Plan, Country Profiles and various reviews and catalogues.

Hard copies of publications are available for purchase through Books online and electronic versions are available for free download. A range of publications are also translated into regional languages where appropriate.

22/05/2013 External Review released

The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Bob Carr, has today released the finding from an Independent Review into ACIAR. The review, the first of ACIAR since 1998, confirms ACIAR’s role in contributing to global food security and poverty alleviation and effectiveness in delivering outcomes. Minister Carr said “The review team have said that ACIAR is an institution of which all Australians can be proud. I too share that view.”

15/05/2013 ACIAR and the 2013-14 Federal Budget

The 2013-14 Commonwealth Budget, presented on 14 May 2013, has allocated $94m to ACIAR. An additional $35m will be sourced from external funding partners, including AusAID.

02/05/2013 John Allwright Fellowship applications now open

Applications are now open for ACIAR’s John Allwright Fellowships, part of the Australia Awards program.

03/12/2012 Australia-Canada partnership for food security in Africa

A strategic partnership between the newly-launched Australian International Food Security Centre and Canada’s International Development Research Centre was announced on Friday 30 November to improve food security in sub-Saharan Africa.

Senator The Hon Bob Carr, Minister for Foreign Affairs, made the announcement at the opening of the international forum, “Food Security in Africa: Bridging Research and Practise”. He also launched the Australian International Food Security Centre (AIFSC).

Khairun Nisa is one of a network of farming advisory staff employed in villages across Aceh, Indonesia. However Khairun does more than occupy an office and attend events; she is one of a new generation of enthusiastic, trained staff looking for opportunities to help farmers grow better crops and improve their livelihoods. Her motivation comes from her own family farm—her workshop where she experiments with crops not grown locally, as well as improving yields of crops familiar to local farmers.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Senator Carr, recently commissioned an external review of ACIAR.

The review will assess ACIAR’s appropriateness, effectiveness and efficiency in response to the changing global context.

09/11/2012 South Pacific cocoa growers rate their own beans

How many cocoa growers have tasted chocolate made from their beans? With assistance from two Australian chocolate companies, ACIAR’s Pacific Agribusiness Research for Development Initiative (PARDI) cocoa project recently produced single origin chocolate bars from samples collected throughout Vanuatu and Solomon Islands, allowing farmers to taste the fruits of their labour for the first time.

ACIAR’s Annual Report for 2011-12 was tabled in Parliament on Wednesday 31 October 2012. The report highlights major achievements in the past financial year, and outlines the Centre’s research and financial performance.

26/10/2012 Australia's input in international food policy research

The International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) has just issued a new publication outlining Australian Government involvement in international food policy development.

The Institute provides solid research and evidence-based policy options to partners in donor and recipient countries. It is part of the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR).
