Women’s group in southern Mindanao
Women are often the first to take on landcare and the women in the Malisbong Community Development Organisation are no different. They have planted vegetables and fruit trees around their homes as a more diverse and nutritious food source for their families, and they hope to eventually increase their incomes.
Children teaching parents
Since November 2007, the Malamba elementary school and the adjacent high school have been working with Catholic Relief Services (CRS) to bring landcare into the schools.
Landcare researcher Agustin (‘Jun’) Mercado, Jr
Jun Mercado is Research Manager at the World Agroforestry centre in Claveria. He facilitated the country’s first landcare initiative in 1996. His challenge was to help tackle the major soil erosion problem of farmers in Claveria, where soil losses of 50–300 tonnes per hectare every year were reducing farmers’ annual crop yields by 200–500 kilograms per hectare. Jun Mercado is Research Manager at the World Agroforestry centre in Claveria. He facilitated the country’s first landcare initiative in 1996.

Marcelino Patindol from Claveria is the President, Board of Trustees, of the Landcare Foundation of the Philippines Inc. and his farm is a demonstration of landcare’s success.
Australian project leader, Noel Vock
Noel Vock, an extension officer with Queensland Primary Industries and Fisheries, has led the Philippines Landcare Project for ten years, encouraging farmers and their communities to take control of their own problems and to implement appropriate solutions.
New book guides grassroots landcare approach in the Philippines
A book based on the experiences of landcare facilitators and farmers involved in the ten-year Philippines-Australia Landcare Project has been officially launched in Australia during National Landcare Week.
