Research that works for developing countries and AustraliaDr Mirko Stauffacher
Dr Mirko Stauffacher is Research Program Manager for the Land and Water Resources program. The Program focuses on water management and the interface between agriculture and environmental quality, with a broad scale concentration on these issues. Dr Stauffacher has a PhD in geology from the University of Geneva (Switzerland) on spatial modelling of sediment and nutrient fluxes from agricultural areas. The research work was done in collaboration with the United Nations Environment Programme Global Resource Information Database (UNEP/GRID). In 1994, Dr Stauffacher was awarded a post-doctoral research fellowship from the Swiss National Fund for Scientific Research and joined the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) Land and Water Division in Canberra (Australia) to work on salinisation processes and management. His research work focused on catchment scale surface and groundwater balance modelling under different land management scenarios. He was also involved in the Cooperative Centre for Catchment Hydrology (CRCCH) working on the quantitative and qualitative impacts of land management on water resources. In 2004, Dr. Stauffacher was appointed Salinity Research Director at CSIRO Land and Water, leading an extensive research portfolio covering soil and water sciences.
